The University of Arizona Bands are proud to present the first concert of the 2017-2018 academic year on Tuesday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Crowder Hall of the Fred Fox School of Music. This combined concert will feature both the University of Arizona Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Chad R. Nicholson, and the University of Arizona Wind Symphony under the direction of Professor Chad Shoopman.

The Wind Ensemble will be performing “Fascinating Ribbons” by Joan Tower, “Affirmation” by Wayne Oquin, and “Limerick Daydreams” by Nathan Daughtrey. The Wind Symphony will be performing “Windsprints” by Richard Saucedo, “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl, and “Second Suite in F” by Gustav Holst.

October 7, 7:30 PM : Music + Festival 2017: Hindemith, Tower, Ellington

The Tenth Annual Music + Festival will be highlighted by the presence of composer Joan Tower, one of America’s foremost composers. An entire concert will be devoted solely to the music of Ellington, and a rare performance of an Ellington work for orchestra and jazz ensemble will be heard. The festival also provides the opportunity to encounter the music of the 20th-century giant, Paul Hindemith, who through composition, conducting, and teaching, transformed musical life in Europe and America in the 20th century.

The University of Arizona Wind Symphony is made up of outstanding undergraduate and graduate performers at the Fred Fox School of Music. Under the direction of Associate Director of Bands Chad Shoopman, the Wind Symphony performs a wide variety of standard and modern wind band literature. This exciting program includes hallmark works by Mackey, Jager and Schuman.

The University of Arizona Wind Ensemble enjoys a national and international reputation as one of the premiere ensembles of its kind. Under the leadership of Director of Bands Chad Nicholson, musicians represent many of the finest wind and percussion performers in the Fred Fox School of Music. This concert will feature faculty artist Dr. Matthew Tropman, performing “Three Visions of El Greco” for tuba and wind ensemble by Ethan Wickman.

Under the direction of Dr. Chad Nicholson, the UA Chamber Winds is a small, flexible ensemble consisting of distinguished woodwind and brass players from the Fred Fox School of Music. This ensemble provides these students with an important chamber music experience that places a high degree of musical responsibility upon each individual, and highlights wind music from the 17th century to newly composed repertoire.

Sharing the podium at this evening’s concert will be former Director of Bands at the University of Arizona, Gregg Hanson. Professor Hanson, who led the ensemble for 26 years, will be warmly welcomed back for a special selection in this program.

December 9, 1:30 PM at Crowder Hall: University of Arizona Outreach Honor Band 25th Anniversary Concert
The Fred Fox School of Music welcomes Dr. Matthew Williams to the faculty. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, Dr. Williams will direct the UA Outreach
Honor Band, an ensemble open to advanced musicians in grades 6-9 from Southern Arizona music programs. Assisted by music education and music performance majors, repertoire is selected to challenge the members on several levels and features pieces by leading composers for wind ensembles and young bands. UA Wind Ensemble & UA Wind Symphony

The University of Arizona Wind Ensemble will be featured at the 2018 College Band Directors National Association conference at Sonoma State University. This concert will provide our home audience with a conference preview. The Wind Ensemble will showcase faculty artist Theodore Buchholz on a new work by acclaimed composer Carter Pann, which was co-commissioned by the University of Arizona. The High Songs for Amplified Cello and Chamber Winds is a work that broadens the possibilities of strings and wind band colors using a modern musical language.
